Electrical utilities have important private telecommunication networks that have been installed for many decades and are being constantly expanded and updated. Supervision and management is a pressing daily situation for a few people who are also constantly faced with new technologies and an increasing work load. From 1987 telecommunication manufacturers had only proprietary supervision and control systems that pushed private networks to strongly specialize various people in the almost cryptic man machine interface (MMI). In this situation Electra de Viesgo had to decide how to integrate a transmission management system of fibre with a radio-link digital transmission network, LAN system, a WAN packet switching network system, a PABX network system and a low level telecontrol system in one UNIX platform with a MMI that is simple and easy to operate for all those who are not specialized. It was called the SISUR project. The simple network management protocol (SNMP) and proxy agent concept was selected among the standards with a practical vision in order to develop the integration solution as quickly as possible.
