Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) have a dynamic topology and are also multihop in nature. This makes provision of Quality of Service (QoS) parameters in these networks extremely difficult. One of the main reasons for the low QoS in MANETs is the loss of packets due to sudden breakage of links. Hence it becomes imperative to provide a routing protocol that keeps on providing backup routes in a judicious manner when the main route fails. Also, multimedia transmission has become the need of the day with applications in video conferencing, transmission of important images, in emergency situations etc. All these applications need to be supported by QoS guarantees in the form of good throughput, good packet delivery ratio etc. and this can be ensured only by an efficient routing protocol. Multimedia transmission in MANETs should also work in sparse as well as dense MANETs. Multimedia transmission may become particularly difficult in sparse MANETs due to disconnections because of low node density. In this paper, AODV nthBR protocol that provides backup routes in an efficient manner is simulated for multimedia transmission in sparse as well as dense MANETs and under normal as well as increased traffic conditions. Simulation has been done in MATLAB and the QoS parameters obtained from the results show that AODV nthBR protocol successfully transmits multimedia packets with normal and increased traffic rate in sparse as well as dense MANETs.
