In this manuscript, the idea of substrate engineering is proposed and studied. The study is performed over a resistive patch printed on top of various 3D printable substrates. Two 3D printable fibers are used for the purpose: one is polylactic acid (PLA) and the other is conductive acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (CABS). The substrate design and composition are optimized for lowering overall thickness improving bandwidth, and quality factor. At last, a unit cel design is proposed for X-band absorption. More than 90% absorption is achieved up to 45° for both TE and TN polarization. The unit cell has 4-fold symmetry and is mounted on top of a honeycomb substrate made up of a composition of PLA and CABS fiber having 50% mixing by volume.
