The Greek and Roman theatres have been always source of inspiration for the architects who would like to reproduce good acoustic conditions inside an open-air performance arts space for modern uses. As such, the arch. G. De Luca (1912-2004) realized the project of unroofed arena for the community of Naples, considered the biggest in Southern Italy. Acoustic measurements of the existing conditions have been undertaken in accordance with the standard requirements outlined in 3382-1. In addition, some suggestions of how to improve the acoustics of this arena have been given by the authors regarding the introduction of an acoustic shell to be covering the area of the stage. The results of the acoustic simulations have been compared with the on-site measurements to establish the benefits that a covered structure can generate for matching the optimal values of the acoustic parameters.
