When distribution system with non-effectively grounded neutral occurs ground fault, the fault current is very small in amplitude, so the faulted location identification accurately is very difficult. To solve this problem, a new algorithm of travelling wave fault location in ddistribution line based on improved morphological gradient is adopted. The algorithm selects transient current travelling wave of prominent fault signal characteristics, to extract the α-mode of transient current travelling wave by phase-module transformation and to structure morphological filter to filtrate the α-mode. The method of improved morphological gradient extracts the head of this α-mode of travelling wave and achieves accurate fault location through the principle of single terminal location. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the principle of the algorithm is simple and its calculation is small.
