In this paper, a compact two-patch array design is proposed for unmanned aerial vehicle applications. High gain directive antennas are employed to extend the wireless transmission range of either control signals or data streams. Considering that the handheld remote controller is likely to be aligned toward the airplane during operation, a compact patch array, which can be attached to the top of a remote controller, is designed. The antenna is operated in the 2.4 GHz band. To maximize the radiation efficiency, patches with air cavities are employed. Vertical polarization is chosen to match the antenna on the airplane. Measured results of the prototype antenna exhibit desired performance features for the operation scenario.
