In the paper we discuss the problem of the definition of single-mode conditions for transverse optical modes in a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser with incorporated two-dimensional photonic crystal. Results presented here shows, that analysis of mode properties using BV diagrams for guiding modes is difficult to apply in the case. To omit the problem, we have used computation of the normalized propagation constant of a waveguiding mode B versus vacuum propagation constant k. In result, the single-mode conditions for defect area formed by one removed air-hole were find.
