Switched reluctance motors (SRMs) are commonly used in automotive industries because of their excellent fault-tolerant abilities and robust structure. Power converter is an essential but most susceptible part in an SRM drive. This paper presents a new diagnostic scheme for power converter fault detection and localization based on a single current sensor. The proposed scheme effectively detects the typical transistors faults by supervising the upper freewheeling current and the fundamental current. Extensive simulation results based on a 12/8 SRM demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed fault detection scheme, which significantly increases the reliability of the SRM drive system.
