The paper describes an approach taken in order to obtain LHM (left-handed material) behavior in conventional CPW lines. It consists in loading the host CPW with split ring resonator (SRR) particles adequately placed along the line. As a result, a frequency range close to the quasi-static resonance frequency with negative values of magnetic permeability exists. Furthermore, by additionally including shunt connected thin wire stubs, an effective value of dielectric permittivity can also be achieved and hence, the LHM behavior is obtained. Simulation as well as measurement results confirm the initial theoretical predictions, giving rise to devices exhibiting LHM behavior with very low insertion losses and very compact size, due to the sub-lambda operating regime of the SRR particles.
