In this work we described the use of free-space-optics (FSO) for sensing applications in a field test demonstration using a SmartGrid optics R&D platform. The test evaluation was performed in an overhead transmission line during around eight months. We also described the main factors that influence the coupling loss of the FSO devices and the proposed mitigation to turn this application practical in real systems.
