The electrical properties of melon oil were studied and its applicability as liquid insulating and cooling material in distribution transformers was investigated. The investigated parameters include the dielectric characteristics and breakdown voltage as function of temperature. The experiments carried out on the edible oil in this investigative study also include the determination of its specific gravity, viscosity, flash point, pour point, acidity level, and conductivity. The results of the study indicates that melon oil is suitable for application as liquid insulating material in transformers in tropical regions where temperature rarely go to sub-zero degree. However, the paper finally suggested that further investigation is required for long term optimum performance of the oil.
