In this paper, surface UV-coating spacers with four kinds of surface coating schemes were prepared, including full coating (fully coated), localized coating near high voltage (HV-coated), at the middle of spacer surface (middle coated) and near grounded electrode (GND-coated). The composite coating consists of BaTiO 3 fillers and UV-cured resin matrix. Then, the flashover voltage of surface coating spacers was tested under 50Hz AC voltage in SF 6 atmosphere. The results show that among the four coating schemes, HV-coated scheme is expected to improve the flashover voltage of spacer, but only when dielectric constant of surface coating reaches very high (~1000). This research offers fundamental guidance for the design and manufacturing of surface functionally graded material (SFGM) with outstanding surface flashover performance.
