A silicon photonic 2-dimensional grating coupler (2D GC) integrated with dual-parallel germanium electro-absorption modulators (Ge-EAM) for generating four-level photonic pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) has been proposed. Combining two polarizations of light modulated by two parallel EAMs in 2D GC, high-speed 50Gb/s PAM-4 photo-detected signal has been attained.
