Generating realistic virtual environments offers a powerful tool for users to explore new worlds, rediscover existing worlds and en-gage with environments in unique and novel ways. In this paper we explore how virtual environments can be designed as an experi-ential medium to better understand the relationship between spatial cognitive phenomenon and the environment. We discuss design underpinnings of what can create a sense of environmental realism through the configurational elements of space, and the procedures and rules that help facilitate rapid deployment of virtual environments.
