One of the main challenges that must be taken up by many industries in the coming years is to allow fast and flexible production of complex products that meet customer's requirements in an optimised way. We present here a new research approach allowing ICT-supported engineering of complex products that consists in an optimised assembly of partially pre-defined solutions. This approach is based on a tightly integrated combination of two ICT technologies: Semantic Web technologies, for a parametric modelling of all information and knowledge, and Genetic Algorithms (GA), for an optimised configuration of products. With this approach we clearly show the innovative features compared to the state-of-the-art in both product modelling and GA-based optimisation separately.
