The lifetime of tools used for hot forming processes is usually limited by the formation of crack nets resulting from alternating temperatures and stresses during service. The formations of cracks are based on cyclic plastic deformations and thermal stresses are driving forces of crack propagation. In this paper, thermal fatigue of tool steel X38CrMoV5-1 (AISI H11) during total strain control is investigated in the temperature range between 100 °C and 650 °C. In all cases, material softening with increasing numbers of thermal cycles was observed. At higher numbers of cycle formation and propagation of cracks are important factors of the resulting cyclic stresses. The influence of temperature amplitudes as well as of upper and lower temperatures on thermal fatigue lifetime are discussed.
