During the Translation II seminar at the Center for Didactics of Art and Interdisciplinary Education at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, environmental education was examined as an integral component of the new teaching subject technology and design, with a focus on interdisciplinary teaching. The eight resulting student positions took the motif of the neophyte (invasive species) to produce individual art projects, and also translated those projects into or developed associated teaching concepts with interdisciplinary teaching potential. Their in-depth explorations range from an engagement with the private sense of organization, to investigating and decorating glitches in concrete, and methods for dyeing and printing using natural materials. There is a wide range of projects with diverse objectives. From learning by making, to developing awareness in the context of nature and the environment, to sensitizing one’s own perception - if applied, the concepts that these university students came up with could making exciting contributions to the personal development of the next generation of school students.
