Compliments and compliment responses have been widely studied in second language (L2) Spanish pragmatics pedagogical interventions. Results from previous research suggest that teaching the pragmatics of compliments is effective in increasing competence among learners of Spanish as an L2. This chapter examines the effects of Language Learning Strategy Instruction (LLSI) used to teach pragmatic strategies to students following a semester-long study abroad program. The instructional treatment included awareness-raising strategies, modeling, evaluation, and expansion of student self-directed learning. Student pragmatic competence was measured with a pre- and post-written discourse completion test. Additionally, qualitative student responses to a questionnaire were analyzed for the effectiveness of prescribed tasks to develop their pragmatic strategies. This study indicates that a combination of these tasks appears to be most advantageous in the learning of pragmatic strategies applied to compliments and compliment responses.
