The utilization of anesthesia in the conduct of studies of phlogistic agents has largely been avoided because of the potential problem of corticosteroid interference (Ondo and Kitay, 1972). However, recent observations with urethan suggest that it would be the anesthetic of choice in evaluation of the inflammatory response to inflammatory mediators (O’Duffy and Chahl, 1980). The present study involves evaluation of the effect of urethan anesthesia on carrageenan-induced inflammation. Data indicate that urethan anesthesia can profoundly inhibit carrageenaninduced inflammation.
