Remarks: This is one of the two cuprea -like metallic red species known from South America (but see under A. fulgida). It is closely related to A. philipi and it is treated and diagnosed under that species. Although Argia cuprea has been recorded as occurring in South America (e. g. Prez-Gutirrez & Palacino-Rodriquez 2011, Amaya- Perilla & Palacino-Rodriguez 2012), this species has not been collected south of Panama (Garrison & von Ellenrieder 2017). We have been unable to examine Ris' examples of Argia cuprea Form b but his illustration of the dorsal view of the cerci (Fig. 134) of a male from Villavicencio, Colombia strongly suggest that his specimens represent A. dives. In dorsal view, the outer margin of cercus in A. dives is about as long as the inner margin (Figs. 107a, 108a); in A. philipi, the outer margin of the cercus is clearly shorter than the inner margin (Fig. 119b). Ris (1918) mentioned the possibility that at least one of his specimens might represent A. dives ("Das ♀ vom Rio Songo ist erhebIich grosser, stimmt aber sonst vllig berein, was natrlich nicht ausschliesst, dass dazu ein etwas verschiedenes ♂ gehren knnte. Abd. 32, Hfl. 26. Vielleicht ist es der Form zuzurechnen, die Frster (Arch f. Naturgesch. 1914, A, 2, p. 61) nach 1 ♂ vom Vulkan Vilcanota in Peru als A. cuprea dives beschreibt." [The female from Songo River is considerably larger, however it agrees otherwise entirely, which of course does not leave out the possibility that it could belong to a somewhat different male. Abd 32, HW 26. Maybe this form belongs to what Frster (Arch. f. Naturgesch. 1914) described as A. cuprea dives from 1 ♂ from volcano Vilcanota in Peru.]). Fraser (1946) further complicated matters by including A. cupraurea (as forma d) and Argia cuprea forma a and b of Ris under his synonymy for A. cuprea and describing and illustrating (Figs. 1, f & g) a new form, Argia cuprea Forma c, as new from San Antonio, Peru. These are treated under A. limitata.
