infusions and displayed a decreased scatter in this phase of the study. At the end of the infusion period the levels rebounded to values in excess of control. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that infusion of 20% MCT emulsions alone is safe in healthy volunteers. Due to concerns regarding the immunomodulatory effects of LCT in TPN regimes, these data justify the inclusion of MCT in newer complex emulsions and in addition an increase in their contribution as an energy substrate by increasing the ratio relative to LCT and newer components such as omega 3.
