Our previous interviews with students and tutors taking part in online tutorials showed that transparency was needed for the tutors on what was happening in breakout rooms. In particular, tutors wanted to know if students were engaging with the content and interacting with each other. In cases where this was not happening, tutors wanted to be made aware so they could enter the breakout rooms to support the group. Based on previous work using AI to measure engagement in a videoconferencing platform, we devised a mock experiment to trial ways of showing engagement levels of each breakout room to the tutor.
