The observation of single crystal surfaces by an interference microscope makes it possible to measure simultanecusly the growth rate and the ratio of the height of the molecular steps to their distance from one another. The investigation was carried out on (110)-surfaces of hexa-methylentetramine crystals which grew from vapor at 50 °C and supersaturations between 5 and 25 %, During growth at constant super-saturation changes or variations of the effective growth center are observed. At the same time the growth rate and the ratio of the step distance changes while the veloxity of the step growth remains constant. The results are in accordance with a growth mechanism by screw dislocations. The growth steps moving across the surface are found to be monomolecular and show sudden changes in their distance to one another.
