This thesis considers evidence for prehistoric subsistence in New Ireland based on material from a Pleistocene midden near Kanangusngus. The fieldwork from which it derives was part of the Lapita Homeland Project. Begun in 1983, its objectives were to discover the origin of makers of Lapita pottery (thought to be the ancestors of the Polynesians) and the extent over which Lapita sites were found.
