HIV infection is a global menace and India alone is responsible for four million of the total 42 million patients. Verticle transmission contributes 50,000 patients annually in India. Prevention of parent to child transmission (PPTCT) protocols are in place and these are discussed with stress on counselling and a multidisciplinary approach. Awareness amongst the public and medical personnel needs to be highlighted. The protocols for breastfeeding and vaccination caries for developing countries and there is an ongoing review for prevention and treatment.
