Ammocharis coranica is a bulbous southern African species reported to be used to treat mental illness. Eight Amaryllidaceae alkaloids of the aromatic, lycorine or crinine type were found in the current study, five of which, hippadine, lycorine, caranine, acetylcaranine, and 1-O-acetyl-9-O-demethylpluviine have previously been isolated from this species. A further three alkaloids, 6α-hydroxybuphanidrine, golceptine and a new compound of the crinine type, charisine, were isolated in this work. Charisine is a tetramethoxylated crinine alkaloid, and the first documented to be methoxylated on the 5,10b-ethano bridge of this subclass.
