Students who enrol at university and do not engage are at risk of failing their courses. They may also incur unwarranted debt, lower their GPA and impact their ability to return to future study. Commencing students who are not engaged in the early weeks of study may not know that specific administrative processes are required to officially withdraw from a program. Successful navigation across and within the culture of higher education often requires understanding about policy or processes that new students, particularly those in an enabling program, often lack. This evidence-based initiative aimed to clearly identify students enrolled in pathway studies, who were not engaged, and to administratively unenroll them before the university census date. Students with low engagement were also identified. A personalised approach was used to counteract the potentially negative implications of disengagement, to support students to make informed enrolment decisions, and keep the door open for future studies.
