The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has funded innovative research to enable Morphing Aircraft Structures (MAS). The goal of this project is to create and advance enabling technologies to permit the development of aerodynamically efficient air vehicles capable of radical shape change. This paper will discuss the overall configuration requirements, in terms of the external vehicle configuration, which can enable significant improvements in system performance characteristics such as: endurance, payload, range and cruise speed. Raytheon will demonstrate how a winged, subsonic-cruise missile configuration incorporating morphing aircraft structures can enhance existing tactical capabilities or enable entirely new capability. To avoid ITAR restrictions, arguments will be made utilizing a simplified analysis based upon basic principles and text book equations.
