The project will consist of a randomized controlled trial of an empirically supported intervention that will be tailored specifically to the needs of the students in Southern Illinois University's Aviation program. The performance-based intervention will be based on principles from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, an intervention that has been successfully used in other high-stress environments. The proposed study will deliver a) a much needed, high-quality intervention that will benefit students with greater achievement and progress in the program and benefit the aviation program by reducing student dropout and examination failure; b) an excellent training opportunity for graduate student therapists in the clinical psychology program who will receive meaningful training and supervision in implementing a performance-based intervention as well as research experience in developing a research study, collecting and analyzing data, and writing scholarly manuscripts; and c) results of a novel intervention that will help us understand the feasibility and utility of such an intervention.
