The objective of this study is to investigate whether the presence of women politicians has an effect on the incidence and severity of violence against women (VAW). We pre-register a quasi-experiment to test this claim. Specifically, we plan to use a regression discontinuity design to compare VAW outcomes in Mexican municipalities that barely elected a male candidate as opposed to a woman candidate to those where a women candidate barely defeated a male candidate. We plan to use the 2018 municipal elections in Mexico and data on the incidence of VAW as well as reported cases of VAW.
