The present investigation was carried out in the year 2019–2020 with the objective to unravel the effect of varying shading intensity of green shade nets on growth and stomatal parameters in major Ocimumspp. (O. tenuiflorum, O. sanctum, O. basilicumand O. gratissimum). Plants were kept under different green shade net having variable shade intensities (35%, 50%, 75%, 90%) and open condition for next 90 days in Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. Growth parameters like number of branches, number of leaves, fresh weight, dry weight, were recorded to be higher in 35% shading intensity. Whilst plants in control conditions recorded highest stem diameter, root length, stomatal frequency and stomatal index in comparison to all other shading treatments. Parameters like plant height, internodal length and leaf area were recorded higher in 90% shading intensity possibly an adaptation to maximize the incident light received. Results of the investigation exemplify requirement of moderate light intensity for better growth in Ocimumspp. Thus, this study endorsed the use of 35% shading intensity of green net on better growth performance and commercial production of Ocimumspp.
