The article discusses the role of respiratory therapists (RT) in allowing quality sleep in the intensive care unit (ICU). Topics covered include the impact of sleep on one's health, the sleep disturbances reported by patients after discharge from hospitals and the differences between natural sleep and sedation. Also mentioned is the role of RTs in weaning from mechanical ventilation and in advocating the use of sleep-friendly sedation protocols.
