Chapter 19 of the book "Social Work in Health Settings: Practice in Context" is presented. It addresses a community-based response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. A brief background on the Gay Men's Health Crisis, a nonprofit, voluntary organization established by a group of New York City gay professionals is provided. Public policy toward people affected by AIDS and HIV prevention strategies have been influenced by advocacy activities on a local and national level. The problems presented by the introduction of managed care by private insurers for persons with AIDS and their families are cited.
