The author describes his "Novel Hacks" group project course which asks students to hack a novel through web-based tools to explore new meanings in it. He notes that examining the novel is interesting because of its prestige as a literary form. The author observes that combining classic texts with digital workings of texts clarified the students' historical relationships with each other, and made them aware of the new in classic forms and the roots of screen-based reading in past practices.
