Boundary factors and contextual contingencies: configuring electronic templates for healthcare professionals.

The article presents an action research study which proposed an approach that can balance the perspectives between standardization and reconfiguration in the design process for hospital information systems (HIS). The study was conducted through a customization process of electronic triage and tracking system for several emergency departments in Canada. The study suggested distinguishing the difference between boundary factors and contextual contingencies in HIS design and reconfiguration.
