The article provides a framework of how to manage patients with muscle disease and reviews the clinical features of the most common acquired and genetic conditions in adult practice. It describes acute and subacute presentations, chronic and slowly progressive muscle disorders including the dystrophinopathies, and muscle disease management. It also presents an aetiological classification of muscle diseases, cardiac and respiratory involvement, and creatine kinase levels as guide to myopathies.
