This article provides a short history of the competition between telephone companies and cable companies for market share in the internet subscription business. The authors think that cable will win out long term over telephone digital subscriber lines in the battle for business in high-speed digital data in the United States. They place their bets on cable for its ability to carry digital information faster. The market share of high income homes is noted as critical to technological adoption. Price competition driven by the 1996 Telecommunications Act is discussed.
