Medical researchers have begun in question the appropriateness of guidelines (supported by the National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society, and others) which recommend that women between forty and fifty obtain mammograms every one to two years. This paper reports on the early stages of a consumer research program which seeks to understand how women are responding to this controversy. The findings have implications both for dealing with the current controversy and for improving preventive health programs of all types. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
