This article gives details of Italian company ENEL SpA's adoption advanced clean coal technology in its conversion plans for the 4x660 MWe oil fired Torrevaldaliga Nord power plant. The new units will have the same gross capacity as the old ones, but efficiency will increase by more than 10%, rising from 40% to 44.7% - mainly through the adoption of supercritical boilers with high superheater and reheater temperatures. According to ENEL, the Torrevaldaliga Nord project is a response to the demand for competitive power plants in a liberalized energy market in a scenario without nuclear power. INSET: World's lowest guaranteed emissions limits.
