Highlights: [•] Two types of Cenozoic K-rich magmas were emplaced on the Ailao Shan-Red River fault. [•] The pre-escape magma was emplaced prior to activation of the fault (ca. 40–30Ma). [•] The post-escape magma was erupted (ca. 5–0.1Ma) in south and southern Yunnan. [•] The first resulted from adiabatic melting of crust-contaminated asthenosphere. [•] The second erupted during regional transtension, related to seafloor spreading. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
