In this study, the superelasticity of shape memory alloy (SMA) bars was used to develop a new self-centering friction damper (SCFD). A modified SMA constitutive model was established and verified using cyclic tensile test results of the SMA bars to establish the theoretical model of the SCFD. An effective method for the multiparameter optimization design of the SCFD was developed, which is applicable to other hybrid dampers. This optimal method using the genetic algorithm was based on defining an optimization calculation that reflects the dissipative coefficient and equivalent viscous damping as the evaluation indices and the SCFD design variables as the optimal parameters.
