The article presents the observational studies have shown obesity (defined using body mass index [BMI]) to be associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) risk, but its causal role remains unclear. Topics include the dramatic weight loss following bariatric surgery did not reduce RA risk among participants in the Swedish Obese Subjects study, and the obesity is also paradoxically associated with reduced mortality among RA patients.
