Three methods for determining the type of LPSO-phases in an Mg–Zn–Y alloy are described: electron diffraction and two methods based on high-resolution image analysis. The diffraction method consists in counting the diffraction spot between (000)Mg and (00.1)Mg reflections; comparison with the calculated diffraction patterns allows determining the mixed types of LPSO-phase. The routine operations with high-resolution imaging using Fourier filtering and building intensity profiles in Digital Micrograph are described in detail. Recommendations on the preferred orientation of the sample for each method are given. The procedure for identifying (00.2)Mg layers using template figures and a simplified search for stacking faults in an image using a Fourier mask for reflection is described. The advantages, possibilities and limitations of each method are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
