In this study, a method is proposed to reduce the high cross‐polarization (XP) of the microstrip patch antenna by changing the current of the higher‐order resonant mode. The interference of the TM1/2,2 mode of the antenna to the TM3/2,0 mode is reduced by loading a pair of wide gaps and two short‐ended stubs. The lateral current that excites the nonradiation edge is effectively bent, which can reduce the XP while not damaging the main polarization radiation. The simulation and measurement results show that the cross‐polarization ratio of the antenna reaches 45.3 dB, and the suppression effect can be achieved over the entire range of the elevation angle. In addition, the proposed technology is simple, effective, and integrable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
