The article presents a study which investigates the effects of propofol anesthesia on adult neurogenesis in rat model of forebrain ischemia. The authors of the study analyzed the spatial learning in the Barnes maze and histopathologic damage of the hippocampus of the 80 male Sprague-Dawley rats which were randomly assigned to different treatment groups with propofol. The observed results of the study indicated that propofol administration may have secondary effects on neurogenesis by modulating the severity of histopathologic injury and the regenerative capacity of the hippocampus.
