The article discusses exercise-related syncope (ERS), a brief loss of consciousness occurring either during or immediately following exercise. Though often benign, ERS can signal more severe health issues for young athletes including cardiac problems and early death. The article includes a list of steps for athletic trainers to take in evaluating incidents of ERS including an assessment of vital signs and an initial cardiac examination to supplement the athlete's medical history.
