Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) design procedures have been developed by many researchers in the last 40 years, with different optimization algorithms. The main goals of these studies deal with structural motion control to improve occupants' comfort and to reduce buildings damage when dynamic actions occur. In this work, a new design perspective for a non-conventional TMD is presented by accounting variables of the seismic motion like the duration and site effects. This methodology can also be seen on the point of view of the retrofitting techniques because considering a new story added to an existing building instead of a generic mass it is possible to design the mechanical parameters as it can behave like a TMD thus improving the existing structure seismic performances.
