The authors comment on a study which investigated the role played by rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) C1 and other RVLM neurons in the acute regulation of arterial pressure using the loss-of-function optogenetics. Topics covered include the use of two different viral vectors in the study to introduce Archaerhodopsin T3.0 (ArchT), an inhibitory light-gated proton pump, and results which showed that C1 neurons are not major contributors to sympathetic vasomotor tone in conscious animals.
