This paper seeks to identify the most significant institutional and intellectual problems that have shaped the U.S. Armyâs understanding of the âlessonsâ of past counterinsurgency campaigns. It examines the Armyâs interpretation of three conflicts in which guerrilla warfare played a crucial roleâ"the Philippine War of 1899-1902; the Indochina-Malaya-Korea conflicts of the 1950s; and the Vietnam War. It studies the institutionâs historiography of these conflicts, the exclusion of guerrilla warfare over time, and discusses the reasons why officers who emphasized the importance of guerrilla warfare had limited influence on their institution. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
