The article discusses treatment of hypertension in patients over 80 years old. It notes that clinical studies continue to provide information which modify treatment of hypertension in older patients. An analysis of the Syst-Eur trial revealed that elevated systolic pressures could be reduced safely in most patients while reducing the diastolic pressure. However, diastolic pressure should not be reduced to less than 70 mm Hg2 for patients with known coronary artery disease.
